Performs for

the Music Series at Rizzoli Bookstore

Sunday, January 6th, 2019 – 3pm

1133 Broadway (25th - 26th Streets), New York City

A rare semi-private performance of NYC's most exciting large ensemble will launch the second year of Rizzoli Music Aperitivo.

The Michael Leonhart Orchestra is a powerhouse and eclectic live ensemble in the spirit of Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus and Gil Evans. The orchestra features a magical blend of unique improvisers and world class ensemble players who play or have played for stars like David Bowie, David Byne or Caetano Veloso and bands such as Steely Dan, Sharon Jones & the Dap-kings, the Mingus Big Band, Maria Schneider’s Orchestra, the Tonight Show Band (Roots) and other musicians from the NY/Brooklyn jazz/soul/studio scene.

The MLO will be performing music from the recent Sunnyside records release “The Painted Lady Suite”, praised as “A seductive record that finds a balance between magnificence and melancholy” by the New York Times. The Painted Lady Suite is inspired by the butterfly of the same name. While Leonhart was initially attracted to its flamboyant coloration and wing ornamentation, it was the butterfly’s incredible migration, which spans over six generations and 9,000 miles — twice that of the Monarch butterfly, that sparked his imagination.

Other featured members of the orchestra will be:

Donny McCaslin - tenor sax;  Nels Cline – guitar; Steven Bernstein - trumpet; John Ellis – tenor sax; Philip Dizack - trumpet; Carter Yasutake – trumpet; Jordan McClean – trumpet; Ray Mason – trombone;  Jason Marshall – bari sax; Joe Martin - bass; Kevin Raczka – drums; Elizabeth Pupo-Walker – percussion; Robbie Mangano – guitar; Al Street – guitar; Sara Schoenbeck – bassoon; Nathan Koci - accordion; Pauline Kim – violin; Trevor Exter - cello

Michael Leonhart is a Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate: trumpeter, composer, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. As a trumpeter, Michael has performed with rock legends Steely Dan since 1996, recording two albums with them, including 2000's four-time Grammy winning Album of the Year, Two Against Nature, on which he was a featured soloist, arranger and conductor.  He also appears on Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Grammy-winning 2016 Record of the Year, “Uptown Funk.”  Michael has composed music for stage and screen, including a song for Meryl Streep, whose performance he directed on the Decca soundtrack album Songs of Lahore. Leonhart recently composed music for the score to Rockstar Games “Red Dead Redemption 2”.  Follow the Michael Leonhart Orchestra on Facebook and Instagram
