Ross Bleckner was born in New York City and grew up in Hewlett, NY.  He received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in 1971, a Master of Fine Arts from Cal Arts in 1973, and he has taught at many of the nation’s most prestigious universities. During his career, Bleckner has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally including Kunsthalle Zurich and Moderna Museet, Stockholm, among many others. In 1995, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum held a major retrospective of his paintings. Works by Bleckner are in public and private collections around the globe.

Zachari Logan holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan. Since graduating in 2008, Logan has maintained a studio practice focusing on drawing, painting, ceramics and installation. Numerous artist residencies from New York to Bulgaria are important to his research on the growing nature/culture divide. His work has been exhibited widely, in group and solo exhibitions in the Americas, Europe, and India and can be found in collections worldwide.

About the book:

The Shadow of the Sun: Ross Bleckner and Zachari Logan pairs New York-based painter Ross Bleckner with Canadian artist Zachari Logan to remarkable effect. The artists share a sensibility in artmaking that make for a powerful concert of ideas, forms and materials in both their solo and collaborative works, richly illustrated in this new hardcover catalogue.

On the surface it may appear that Bleckner and Logan have developed oeuvres that are stylistically disparate. The visual references of style are only part of the picture. On a deeper level the catalogue proposes aesthetic links that underpin each artist’s work. They are the means to create a context of understanding for shared notions of visibility/invisibility, sexuality, selfhood, contemporary landscapes, transcendence, the fragility of love and the omnipresence of sickness and death. Both artists share an appetite for representing societal and personal melancholy and reverential beauty. The result is a range of strategies around image-making to inspire a generation of artists nation-wide and abroad.
