A session with Marianne Faithfull led to him working with The Rolling Stones as their official photographer throughout the mid-60s, and he went on to capture music legends from Jimi Hendrix and The Yardbirds to Elton John and Kate Bush. Mankowitz never stopped growing as an artist, taking promotional shots of movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, creating prize-winning advertising imagery for clients from Heineken to British Rail, shooting emerging artists, and publishing numerous books of his work.
