«I collect in this volume three stories that I wrote in the 1950s and 1960s and which have in common the fact of being unlikely and taking place in distant times and in imaginary countries. I wanted to make it a trilogy of experiences on how to realize human beings: in the non-existent Knight the conquest of being, in the halved Viscount the aspiration to a completeness beyond the mutilations imposed by society, in the Baron in the Trees a path towards a non-existent completeness individualistic to be achieved through fidelity to individual self-determination: three degrees of approach to freedom. And at the same time I wanted them to be three stories, as they say, "open", which first of all stand up as stories, due to the logic of the succession of their images, but which begin their true life in the unpredictable game of questions and answers raised in the reader. I would like them to be looked at as a family tree of the ancestors of contemporary man, in which each face hides some trait of the people around us, of you, of myself.»
